About the Product :

Channa dal has a sweet and nutty flavor, is tasty, robust and versatile lentil.  Easy to cook it pairs well with veggies especially sweeter ones like pumplin, squash, zucchini and carrots. Make excellent soups, side dishes and purees.  The most popular legume in India it is nutritious, easy to digest, and have a low rating on the glycemic index making it a great choice for diabetics. It may reduce the risk of heart disease and some forms of cancer.

Use with our Ajika Dal Masala/Spices for tasty and convenient cooking. This blend has no salt, preservatives, fillers or MSG. Channa dal is often used with sweeter vegetables, such as pumpkin and zucchini.

Lentils are:

  • 100% all-natural
  • "Low In Fat, Zero Cholesterol
  • An excellent source of protein and fiber.
  • Extremely nutritious and very easy to prepare; you need onion, tomatoes and fresh vegetables. Ginger paste for dal available in our store.

  • Recipe :

    Louki (Zucchini) Channa Dal
    Ingredients
    1 cup channa dal soaked for 1 hour
    1/2 t turmeric powder (haldi)
    1 t ginger paste
    salt to taste
    3 young zucchini peeled and cubed
    ½ t of garam masala
    Seasonings
    3 T ghee or vegetable oil
    1 t cumin seeds (jeera)
    1-2 whole red chilies
    1/2 t asafetida (hinge)
    2 t ground coriander powder
    Fresh Seasoning
    ½ T fresh lime juice
    Garnish
    4 T chopped cilantro

    Method:
    1. Pick through the dal and wash the dal in a bowl. Drain the water. Add 3 cups of water to a heavy pot and add the dal, 1 T of ghee or oil, turmeric, ginger and salt to taste and boil the dal. Reduce heat add the zucchini and garam masala and let it simmer.
    2. As the dal is simmering heat ghee in a small sauce pan and fry the cumin seeds and red chilies till they brown. Add the asafetida. Add the coriander powder and fry the seasonings. For 2-3 minutes.
    3. Pour the seasonings in the pot of dal and let it continue to simmer on low until the zucchini is butter soft. Adjust the water so that the dal has the consistency you like( from soup like consistency to thick soup pour over dal or to eat with flat bread)
    4. Add the lime juice and garnish with chopped cilantro.
